About Us
Overview of Akans
Akan people is an ethnic group primarily located in central and southern parts of Ghana. Akan jurisdiction extends to Ivory Coast (La Côte d'lvoire) specifically the eastern parts and Togo, as well as other countries.
The word Akan is neologised from Akandifo, an epithet and reference to Bono people which means first or foremost. As Bono people were the first settlers amongst Akan. Indeed oral tradition has it that nearly all the different groups of Akan including Denkyira, Akwamu, Asante, Ahanta, Fante, Wasa, Sefwi etc trace their origins to Bono after migrating from the North or Sudanic region which is south of Egypt. Historically Akan originated from Bono, Bono is the mother of Akan.
